When you can create anything, you’ll likely become overwhelmed with options…

Or create something that is far too obvious or boring…

However, if you impose restrictions on yourself, it literally forces your brain to produce creative, interesting, and unpredictable results!

Not to mention that you’ll instantly remove all the overwhelm by giving your brain a far more simple and focused challenge to deal with.  

For example, if you can only use one note during each bar…  

Unless you love monotonous solos…

It will naturally compel you to use all the other tools at your disposal (rhythm, dynamics, slides, bends, slurs, etc) to make this sound interesting.

While totally ignoring what you are saying…  

It’s going to sound and feel awkward and unnatural.  

And the same thing can happen with improvisation.

Because any time your solos are not “in conversation” with the music…

And your playing doesn’t match what’s going on with the rest of the band…

It’s going to sound unmusical and strange.

But here’s the subtle trick the pros use to make their solos feel musical and inspired:

They continually use notes from the chord that is currently playing…

And as the chord changes they follow this by changing the notes they are using…  

Which automatically makes their solo feel more connected and in sync with the music.  

But you can achieve this pro-level effect with beginner-level skills…  

All you need to do is simply play the root note of the chord, as this new chord appears.  

This means with just three notes, your playing can automatically sound more connected to the song and far more musical.
