How to Hold the Guitar Pick and Proper Guitar Posture

Proper Guitar Positioning:

Before we delve into the intricacies of pick technique, let's start with the basics of holding your guitar. The typical approach is to rest the guitar on your dominant thigh – the thigh that aligns with your dominant hand. For instance, if you're right-handed, the guitar rests on your right thigh. If you're a lefty, it's the left thigh.

While some may opt for the classical position, where the guitar is held on the opposite thigh, it's essential to note that this is more common in classical guitar playing. For most other styles, the folk position, where the guitar is placed on the dominant thigh, is preferred. This position ensures that the guitar's ribs rest comfortably on your thigh, allowing for a relaxed and natural playing posture.  That said, the guitar is less stable with the folk position as opposed to the classical position.

The key to holding the guitar is not to grip it tightly but to cradle it gently, similar to holding a stack of books. This positioning prevents excessive strain on your back and allows your arm to support the guitar, keeping the neck stable. Avoid the common mistake of gripping the neck like a shovel, a habit many beginners develop. Proper Pick Holding Technique:

Now that we've covered the basics of guitar positioning, let's shift our focus to the proper way to hold the pick. The pick is a crucial tool that significantly influences your playing style and sound. Follow these guidelines to ensure you're on the right track:

1. Triangle Pick Orientation:

   - Use a standard pick.

   - Position the longest end of the pick facing towards the guitar, with the tip directed at the strings.

2. Placement on the Guitar:

   - Play over the soundhole for acoustic guitars.

   - For electric guitars, let your hand naturally rest where you feel comfortable.

3. Thumb and Finger Placement:

   - Hold the pick between the thumb and the first finger.

   - While some variations exist, this standard grip provides control and maneuverability.

Avoid holding the pick between the thumb and the second or middle finger, as it can limit your dexterity. Likewise, holding the pick between the thumb and the knuckle is discouraged due to its lack of flexibility when the pick starts slipping. The recommended grip between the thumb and the first finger allows for adjustments and enhances overall control.
